SUNWAY GROUP BROUGHT JOY TO NKF & PATIENTS FOR 2017 CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

On 7 February 2017 at the grounds of NKF 73 poor kidney patients had much to cheer about. They had been chosen from 8 dialysis centres of the Foundation in the Klang Valley to participate in Sunway Group’s Chinese New Year Cheer 2017.

As part of the Group’s annual “Light of Hope” programme, the New Year Cheer 2017 was aimed at reaching out to the poor and touching their lives especially during the festival. Puan Sri Dr. Susan Cheah, the Exco Member of Sunway Group was the Guest-of- Honour for the occasion.

VISIT BY YTM TUNKU TEMENGGONG OF KEDAH TO PUSAT DIALISIS NKF-YAYASAN SULTANAH BAHIYAH (KULIM)

On 18 February 2017, YTM Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, Tunku Puteri Intan Intan Shafinaz Binti Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, made a scheduled visit to Pusat Dialisis NKF - Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah (Kulim) at around 12.30 p.m.

YTM Tunku Temenggong is the Chairman of Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah, a partner of the centre, and was accompanied by Y. Bhg. Dato Haji Nasir Mustafa, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Yayasan and other dignitaries. They were Tuan Hj. Mohamad Bin Che Nai, the District Officer of Kulim District, Tuan Hj. Rhaizad Bin Hj. Rashid, the President of Kulim Municipal Council and staff of the Yayasan and Kulim District Office.

On hand to welcome YTM Tunku Temenggong’s entourage was Ms. Puspa a/p Arjunan, the staff nurse-in-charge of the centre, who subsequently proceeded to brief the royal party on the role of the dialysis centre.



WORLD KIDNEY DAY 2017 CELEBRATED WITH OPEN DAY AT NKF SECRETARIAT

In conjunction with the World Kidney Day (WKD) 2017 on 9 March, an Open Day was held within the secretariat grounds of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF).

To kick off the action was the “jazzercise” involving a majority of the members of the NKF Secretariat staff, and they underwent the half an hour exercise under the guidance-cum-instruction of Ms. Janet C. Ginibun from the Jazzercise Group.

Visitors who were mainly members of the public and NKF patients went about the eight booths and NKF bus to seek screenings and whatever consultations that were available. The bus provided the platform for health checks on amongst others blood pressure, diabetes, body mass index and counselling.


WORLD KIDNEY DAY 2017 CELEBRATIONS AT TAMAN BOTANI, PUTRAJAYA

On 18 March 2017, hundreds of participants, including health and cycling enthusiasts, joined in the last leg of the marathon Cycleton of 30 kilometres at Taman Botani, Putrajaya to commemorate the World Kidney Day (WKD) 2017 with its theme of “Kidney Disease and Obesity”. 

Many had come to participate in a joyous atmosphere with the principal focus in giving a rousing welcome to the 30 cyclists who had cycled all the way from Kangar since 13 March 2017. Of greater emphasis was their show of solidarity in advocating a healthier lifestyle and countering obesity through physical activities such as cycling. 

In reinforcing the prevailing fun and family-friendly environment carnival like activites were held. Amongst these were a Zumba dance, a five-kilometre fun run, free health checks, health exhibitions, a blood donation campaign, CPR lessons and a colouring contest among school children. All these activities saw the participation of people of all ages. 

Not left out too were the organisers of the World Kidney Day (WKD) 2017 celebrations, namely, the Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN), Malaysian Health Promotion Board (MySihat) and National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF). They set up their booths which among other things showcased their services, sold their merchandise, promoted organ donation, carried out health screening and disseminated information on kidney disease.


HEALTH SCREENING AT “HARI PENYAYANG” OF THE SULTANAH BAHIYAH FOUNDATION

In conjunction with the carnival held on 18-21 May 2017 at the Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar for “Hari Penyayang” of the Sultanah Bahiyah Foundation (YSB), NKF’s mobile health screening teams carried out free health screening. 

The health screening was made available to the crowds thronging the carnival in line with NKF’s maxim of bringing about early detection of kidney disease. It involved two health screening teams through the efforts of Mrs Alisa Ng, the co-ordinator from YSB. 

One team was from the NKF PED (Public Education Department) Regional Unit based in Alor Setar, while the other, the NKF Elite LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening Team, travelled all the way from Petaling Jaya to Kedah.


NKF 13TH PATIENT FORUM IN KUANTAN, PAHANG

On 16 July 2017, the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) held its 13th Patient Forum for the first time in Kuantan, Pahang since the Forum was first organized as an annual event in 2003. The Forum acted as an educational and meaningful avenue for dialysis patients and their caregivers to get together to exchange experiences, knowledge and ideas. 

Themed “Improving the Quality of Your Life”, the Forum attracted 300 participants where they were informed and updated on kidney diseases, what the numbers in their medical reports meant, healthy diet, how to improve survival in dialysis treatment, the benefits given by Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) to those who are insured, and how to live positive lives. 

In opening the Forum, Dato’ Norol Azali Bin Sulaiman, a Member of the Pahang State Executive Council-cum-Chairman of the Committee for Health, Human Resources and Special Tasks said, “This Forum serves as a landmark of commitment reflecting NKF’s constant focus to further aid kidney patients in Malaysia as well as to improve their lives.”


NKF PED (PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT) REGIONAL UNIT LAUNCHED IN KOTA BHARU

On 22 July 2017, the National Kidney Foundation Malaysia (NKF) officially launched its PED Regional Unit in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. The unit had been set up in an effort to raise awareness on kidney disease and to facilitate early prevention and detection of the disease with the stationing of PED healthcare professionals to provide easily accessible information on the disease through health talks, health exhibitions and road shows in addition to carrying out mobile health screening. 

About 300 people, including those from government departments and other institutions in Kelantan were at the official launch of the unit-cum-Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebrations. Launching the event was Dato’ Dr. Ramli Bin Mamat, the Kelantan State Executive Council Member-cum-Chairman of the Committee for People’s Welfare, Health, Environment and NGO. 

Also at the launch was Mr. Maniam Raman Chettiar, a member of the NKF Board of Directors-cum-Acting Chairman of the NKF Patient Selection and Welfare Committee who mentioned, “As the regional unit is now in Kota Bharu, we hope to do our part towards increasing public awareness on kidney disease, organ donation and improving the quality of life for kidney patients here in the East Coast Region of Peninsular comprising Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang”.


LAUNCH OF THE NKF PERITONEAL DIALYSIS FUNDING PROGRAMME

On 20 August 2017 Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad Mohd Zaher, the Chairman of the NKF Board of Directors, formally launched the NKF Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Funding Programme at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The launch was in conjunction with the 1st Asia Pacific (APAC) Conference On Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and the 33rd Annual Congress of the Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN) which were also held at the same venue. 

As explained by Dr. Lee Wan Tin, a member of the NKF Board of Directors during the launch, the NKF PD Funding Programme has been in operation since 2016. It is a scheme to provide monetary assistance to poor End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) patients who opt to carry out PD in either the form of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) or Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (APD).


PUSAT DIALISIS NKF – GOOD HEALTH (KAMPUNG PANDAN, KUALA LUMPUR) PATIENTS’ FAMILY DAY CARNIVAL 2017

On 23 September 2017, Pusat Dialisis NKF -Good Health (Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur) successfully held its Patients’ Family Day Carnival 2017. 

It was held in front of the dialysis centre from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. with the main objective of uplifting the spirits of the centre’s patients and hence break the drudgery of the monotonous cycles of haemodialysis treatment they have to endure.


HIGH TEA AT UTARA COFFEE HOUSE, ARMADA HOTEL

29 October 2017 was a special occasion for patients and members of their families from Pusat Dialisis NKF – Dato’ Dr G.A. Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya). 

They were treated to a high tea by staff from the centre headed by the Centre Manager, Cik Siti Fatimah Bte Basir as part of the Family Day celebrations held by the centre. 110 patients and their family members attended the function which was sponsored by the Welfare Department of NKF of Malaysia.


NKF’S 14TH ANNUAL DIALYSIS MEETING (ADM) 2017

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia hosted the 14th Annual Dialysis Meeting 2017 (ADM 2017) from 25 to 26 November 2017 at the Istana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur with the theme ‘Setting the Right Direction’ Holistic Approach of Management for end stage renal disease (ESRD) in Malaysia.  

The two-day meeting was a patient-centred approach to dialysis care that attracted over 600 individuals who were provided with demonstrable personal, clinical and organizational benefits through 28 innovative sessions led by notable experts, exciting key note speeches, informative issues and opportunities to network with hundreds of professionals. 

In conjunction with the ADM, NKF also launched the very first recipe book called ‘Food Your Kidneys Love’ that involved the 5 winning entries of 2nd year culinary students from the Berjaya University College of Hospitality. These students subsequently competed amongst themselves to determine who would emerge the overall winner. Consequently, Mr. Mason Ang Wei Ming was declared the champion to have he privilege of signing on the front page of the recipe book to symbolize the launching of the 14th ADM.
