PATIENT FORUM

OVERVIEW   

The Patient Forum was initiated by the NKF Welfare Department in 2003 and has been an annual event since then until now. It is a platform for dialysis patients, their caregivers and medical staff working in dialysis centres to gather information on kidney diseases, the importance of life style and dietary changes and other relevant matters, and share their experiences on the many daily challenges that they face. NKF Patient Forums were previously held in the following locations:

2005 – Crystal Crown, Kuala Lumpur
2006 – New York Hotel, Johor Bahru
2007 – Armada Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
2008 – Cititel, Penang
2009 – The Zone Regency, Johor Bahru
2010 – Majestic Riverside, Kuching
2011 – Grand Riverview Hotel, Kota Bharu
2012 – Nil
2013 – Impiana Hotel, Ipoh

2020 – Patient Forum was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Patient Forums focused on Improving the Quality of Life of dialysis patients. The topics ranged from information on kidney diseases, safeguarding the health of kidneys, renal nutrition and coping with dialysis. Besides that, motivators pep up the sessions to encourage the audience to think positively about themselves and life. It is hoped that the Patient Forums will provide the boost and encouragement, and give hope to kidney patients and their families.

The Forums feature speakers such as nephrologists, dieticians, social workers, welfare officers and motivators to attract not only patients from NKF but also patients from other NGOs, private dialysis centres and government hospitals. The topics presented are relevant to them so that they understand their situation better and know where and who to look for when they need assistance. In the process it is hoped that they will improve the quality of their lives.
