In April 2026, the Paediatric Nephrology Service, Ministry of Health, Malaysia, sought funding for vascular access surgery for the children who dropped out of peritoneal dialysis. They struggle to establish a working fistula for these children and have to turn to private facilities. Many of these patients were from a low socio-economic background and were not able to support the creation of vascular access in the private.
The PSWC concurred with the request on 18 May 2026. The NKF Board of Directors approved funding for the NKF Paediatric Vascular Access Subsidy on 8 June 2026 to be effective from 1 July 2026 for paediatric patients with end-stage kidney disease to access haemodialysis treatment. The amount of financial subsidy for vascular access creation depends on the financial status as assessed by the NKF Welfare Department, through interviews, home visits where applicable, and reviews of financial documents submitted by applicants.
